Rock Creek Softball opens Varsity Season

Brynn Hammett and Rock Creek didn’t allow a single run as the Mustangs defeated Wamego 4-0 on Friday. Hammett allowed just four hits and induced a fly out from Ashley Faiola to end the game. An early lead helped propel Rock Creek to victory. The Mustangs scored on a groundout by Jayden Weers in the first inning and a single by Maddi Figge in the second inning.

Rock Creek collected seven hits. Jessica Kildow and Olivia Lee each collected multiple hits for Mustangs. Lee and Kildow each managed two hits to lead Mustangs. Rock Creek was sure-handed defensively and didn’t commit a single error. Brynn Hammett earned the win for the Mustangs. She went seven innings, giving up zero runs, four hits, and striking out ten.  “You could feel the anxious energy and the girls did a solid job in game one. Lots of positive things for the first game of the season. It was great to get that first game in finally.”

In game two, it was all Wamego. The Mustangs fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 17-6 loss to Wamego. Wamego took the lead on a single in the first inning. Despite the loss, Rock Creek was able to collect seven hits. Brynn Hammett and Haley Petty each collected multiple hits for the Mustangs. Demi Kunkel, Jayden Weers, and Olivia Lee each notched a hit in the game.  Weers took the loss. “Credit Wamego for putting the ball in play; some great hits, some hits we should have taken away and some we flat missed. Our defense needed to be better, and it wasn’t.  Our game took a turn when we allowed 6 runs in the third; we needed top plate runs earlier and didn’t.”  Rock Creek will play at home again on Tuesday against Chapman and then travel to McLouth on Thursday for games.  Rock Creek is 1-1 on the season.
