Rock Creek JV starts season 2-0

Rock Creek junior varsity softball opened up with games on Thursday, April 5th with wins over Abilene 9-6 and 13-12.
Gracie Ward was the winning pitcher for Rock Creek, striking out six. RC was up 9-0 after 6. Despite allowing six runs in the seventh inning, Rock Creek Mustangs JV defeated Abilene 9-6 on Thursday.

Rock Creek scored three runs in the sixth inning. Alyssa McCormack and Kaitlin Nelson each had RBIs in the big inning.  Danae Adams led Rock Creek Mustangs JV with three hits, including a double. Alyssa McCormack doubled as did Kaitlin Nelson.  Jenna Weers and Kierra Mosby added hits.

Rock Creek Mustangs JV took Thursday’s game in dramatic fashion, with a 13-12 walk-off victory over Abilene. The game was tied at 12 with Rock Creek Mustangs JV batting in the bottom of the sixth when Alyssa McCormack doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring Kierra Mosby for the go ahead run.  The game was complete after 6 complete, as it was too dark to play the 7th inning.

Rock Creek Mustangs JV tallied four runs in the fourth inning. Rock Creek Mustangs JV’s big bats in the inning were led by triples by Kyla McCormack, Malea Karnes and Kara Riffel.  Abilene scored six runs in the second inning.   Mia Leon earned the win for Rock Creek Mustang JV. She allowed eight hits and five runs over four innings, striking out two.  Gracie Ward started the game for Rock Creek Mustang JV. She went two innings, allowing seven runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one.

Rock Creek Mustangs JV tallied 11 hits in the game. Mosby, Alyssa McCormack, Kyla McCormack, and Karnes each racked up multiple hits for Rock Creek. Mosby led the way with three hits in three at bats.

Rock Creek JV will play on Monday, April 9 at home again vs. Clay Center with a 4:00 start.

Mustang Softball splits with Alma in games played Tuesday night at Rock Creek

Rock Creek built a seven-run lead in the fourth inning and then held off Wabaunsee’s charge for a 10-9 victory. Rock Creek collected ten hits in the game.

Brynn Hammett hit a shot that landed for a homerun to ignite the offense in the thir inning. The Mustangs scored five runs in the fourth inning on a home run by Jayden Weers, a double by Maddi Figge, a single by Brook Dillon, and a single by Demi Kunkel.  Brook Dillon went 3-3 while Demi Kunkel went 3-4 notching 6 of the Mustang’s 10 hits. Brynn Hammett earned her 8th win for the season as she tossed all seven innings, striking out five.

brynnhomerJayden Weers had a 4-4 outing in game two, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Wabaunsee in game two, falling 19-7. Weers homered in the first, had 2 doubles and singled in the contest. Rock Creek had 11 hits but Wabaunsee had 18 in the high-scoring affair. Rock Creek scored two runs in the first to take the lead off of Weers’ two out homer.  Wabaunsee took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning and then continued an offensive show to go up 14-2 headed into the fifth. Rock Creek scored five runs in the fifth inning to extend the game. The big inning was thanks to a home run by Brynn Hammett, a single by Maddi Figge, a single by Brook Dillon, and a single by Leighton Herrman.  “I was at least proud of our will in the 5th to avoid the run-rule after having the wind knocked our of our sails, it’s hard to chase 10 runs once you get your back against a wall. We didn’t quit.”

Searle took the loss for the Mustangs, throwing 3 innings. Carmen Mallon completed the second half of the innings from the mound.  Herrman and Weers each had multiple hits and drove in two runs.  Rock Creek is 8-6 on the season and will face MEL opponent Silver Lake on Thursday at 4:00 at Silver Lake.

Rock Creek will honor seniors Brynn Hammett, Jayden Weers, Olivia Lee and Jessica Kildow at the final home games of the season on Tuesday, May 9 at a 4:00 home start.

Rock Creek JV falls to Council Grove in doubleheader

The JV softball team fell short in a back-and-forth affair against Council Grove on Thursday, but eventually Council Grove prevailed 17-15. The game was tied at 14 in the top of the 7th, Council Grove scored 3 and Rock Creek could only add one in the bottom of the inning. Despite the loss, Rock Creek JV did collect 15 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Council Grove had 19 hits on the way to victory. The Mustangs JV scored four runs in the fifth inning. Rock Creek Mustangs JV scored on a triple by Leighton Herrman, a single by Morgan Searle, and a double by Carmen Mallon. Searle, Herrman, Mallon, Kaitlin Nelson, Lori Huston, and Tatum Brunkow each collected multiple hits for Rock Creek in the outing. Herrman and Mallon each drove in two runs to lead in the RBI category. Searle took the loss, throwing all seven innings, striking out five, and walking one. Rock Creek committed 5 errors in the game.morgantoannie

In game two of the twinbill Rock Creek JV watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 14-4 loss to Council Grove. Council Grove took an early lead in the first inning and eventually scored 6 in the top of the first inning. Rock Creek JV answered in the fourth inning with one and scored three runs in the fifth inning. Rock Creek Mustangs JV’s big inning was driven by a triple by Annie Parrick. Lori Huston, Kaitlin Nelson, and Parrick each drove in one run in the game. Carmen Mallon took the loss for Rock Creek Mustangs JV. She went five innings, striking out four, and walking zero. The mustang defense was plagued with 8 errors, making it tough to come from behind in the 2nd game.

Rock Creek sweeps Abilene

The Rock Creek Mustang Softball team jumped out to an early lead in route to a 14-2 victory over Abilene on Thursday. The mustangs scored in the first inning when Brynn Hammett tripled, and was driven home by Olivia Lee on a single.  Rock Creek scored six runs in the second inning.  The Mustangs big inning was driven by a walk by Demi Kunkel, a singles by Hammett  and Lee, followed by a double by Joceline Eichem.  In an errorless game, the mustangs were boosted by 15 hits.  Jessica Kildow, Maddi Figge, Lee, Jayden Weers, Hammett, and Eichem each collected multiple hits. Hammett, Weers, Kunkel, Lee, and Figge each notched 2 RBI’s.  Jessica Kildow went 3-5 in the game. Hammett earned the win. She pitched seven innings, giving up two runs, eight hits, striking out six, and walking one.

Rock Creek’s fate was similar in the nightcap of the double header, earning the 10-9 win over the Abilene Cowgirls that didn’t give up and scratched back to make the game interesting late.  Rock Creek never trailed in the game. Rock Creek led early, up 7-2 through about the 5th, and then Abilene mounted a comeback, but would fall short.   Jayden Weers had a monster night defensively and offensively for the mustangs, belting out two doubles. Haley Petty notched 2 doubles, Kildow and Hammett each doubled as well.  Lee, Weers and Eichem each drove in 2 runs.  Hammett was a competitor on the mound, working hard for the win. She threw six and two-thirds innings, sharing the duties with Carmen Mallon.  Hammett struck out 3. In both games, the final outs were recorded on double plays, in the first game, the final outs were on a slap to Haley Petty at 3rd base who threw the runner out at first to Jayden Weers, who then threw it to the runner attempting to go home, who was tagged out by catcher Demi Kunkel.  In game two with 2 runners on and the score 10-9 with one out, a fly ball was caught by right fielder Olivia Lee who gunned out a runner attempting to tag and plate the tying run.  Demi Kunkel again tagged the runner to record the out and finish the game in an exciting fashion.

Rock Creek will travel to Clay Center tomorrow. Rock Creek is now 7-5 on the season.

Rock Creek splits with Riley County

The Mustangs defeated Riley County 13-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to Maddi Figge, who drove in four runners. Figge drove in runs on her first career home run in the second and a double in the fourth. Rock Creek  secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the third inning. Rock Creek scored on a single by Jayden Weers, a single by Joceline Eichem, a Jessica Kildow single and Haley Petty drove in 2 with her first long ball homerun of the season. Hammett earned the win for the Mustangs. She tossed five innings, giving up one run, two hits, striking out six, and walking one. Rock Creek collected 13 hits. Weers, Brook Dillon, Figge, Petty, and Eichem each collected multiple hits for the Mustangs. Weers went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Rock Creek in hits. Dillon led Mustangs with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with five stolen bases.

Tuesday’s second game against Riley County was a heartbreaker for the Mustangs, as they lost the lead late in a 20-10 defeat. Demi Kunkel, Lee, Hammett, and Joceline Eichem each collected multiple hits for the Mustangs. Eichem, Hammett, and Lee each drove in two runs.  Olivia Lee hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Rock Creek could not make plays as Riley County continued to challenge the defense.  Hammett pitched the majority of the game with Weers and sophomore Morgan Searle also seeing action at pitcher.  Rock Creek plays on the road on both Thursday and Friday against Abilene and Clay Center respectively.  Rock Creek is 5-5 at the halfway mark of the season.

Rock Creek JV picks up double header wins from Riley County

Rock Creek  JV defeats Riley County despite allowing a 3-Run inning in the bottom of the first inning. Rock Creek defeated Riley County 15-5 on Monday.  Rock Creek Mustangs JV took the lead for good with five runs in the third inning. In the third Carmen Mallon doubled, driving in one run, Alyssa McCormack singled to add another run. The Mustangs JV scored six runs in the sixth inning. Rock Creek JV’s big inning was driven by a double by Leighton Herrman , a single by Morgan Searle , a single by Mallon, and a double by Lori Huston.  Searle earned the win for Rock Creek. She threw six innings, allowing five runs, three hits, striking out ten, and walking zero.   The Mustang JV collected 14 hits. Searle, Mallon, Ariana Reed, and McCormack each collected multiple hits. Searle went 4-for-5 at the plate as she led the team with three RBI’s. Rock Creek stole 11 bases during the game as four players stole more than one. Bre Cheever led the way with three.

In game two – Rock Creek beat Riley County behind Carmen Mallon’s no-hitter.  Mallon didn’t allow a single hit as Rock Creek Mustangs JV defeated Riley County 14-1 on Monday.  An early lead helped propel Rock Creek to victory. The Mustangs scored on a double by Ariana Reed and a single by Morgan Searle in the first inning. Leighton Herrman, Mackinzie Zolck, Stephanie Toburen, Emily Ritchey, Luisa Honeywell, Reed, and Searle all had one hit in the game. Mallon earned the win for Rock Creek pitching five innings, surrendering one run, zero hits, striking out six, and walking one. Rock Creek is now 6-6 on the season with Rossville and a Holton Tournament yet to come.

Rock Creek JV hosts Royal Valley & St. Marys in JV triangular

The Rock Creek Mustang JV squad played two Back-And-Forth games on Saturday, winning the first 12-7 against Royal Valley and dropping the 2nd game to St. Marys 10-9.

Rock Creek JV and Royal Valley played a taut affair on Saturday, but Rock Creek eventually prevailed 12-7 after taking the lead for good in the second inning. The game was tied at five with Rock Creek batting in thealyssahitroyalvalley bottom of the second when Tatum Brunkow doubled, driving in two runs. The Mustangs were boosted by Carmen Mallon who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Mallon notched 3 singles and tripled in the fifth. Rock Creek took the lead for good with four runs in the second inning. Laney Scott singled, driving in one run and Ariana Reed singled, driving in one run.  Rock Creek belted out a season high 20 hits in the contest.  Scott, Mallon, Searle, Leighton Herrman, and Brunkow each collected multiple hits for Rock Creek. Brunkow and Mallon each drove in three runs to lead Rock Creek JV. Morgan Searle earned the win for Rock Creek Mustang JV. She tossed three innings, giving up three hits and striking out two. Mallon recorded the last 12 outs to earn the save for Rock Creek.

Rock Creek Mustangs JV and St. Marys played a tight game, but St. Marys pulled out the 10-9 victory on Saturday.  St. Marys was down 9-8 in the top of the sixth inning when there was an error, scoring two runs. Rock Creek Mustangs JV collected 15 hits, but shot themselves in the foot with 9 costly errors. Rock Creek Mustangs JV scored three runs in the fourth inning. The big inning was thanks to a double by Carmen Mallon. Morgan Searle took the loss for Rock Creek Mustangs JV. She threw four innings, giving up four runs, six hits, striking out seven, with no walks. Mallon started kaylarunthe game for Rock Creek Mustangs JV.  She pitched three innings, surrendering six runs, four hits, and striking out two. Leighton Herrman, Laney Scott, Mallon, Ariana Reed, and Mackinzie Zolck each collected multiple hits for Rock Creek Mustangs JV.  Herrman led Rock Creek Mustangs JV with four hits in five at bats.

Rock Creek JV is now 4-6 on the season with games against Riley and Rossville next, and a Holton tournament on May 6th.

Rock Creek JV Softball drops 2 to St. Marys

Rock Creek Mustangs JV watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in an 11-8 loss to St. Marys on Tuesday. Rock Creek collected 11 hits whilte St. Marys had 14 in the high-scoring affair. Rock Creek was down early in the game due to some defensive mishaps but came back to score five runs in the fifth inning. The big inning was thanks to a double by Carmen Mallon, a single by Tatum Brunkow, and a single by Ariana Reed. Mallon took the loss for Rock Creek. She went all seven innings, striking out six, and walking zero, while the mustang defense committed 7 errors. Reed, Mallon, Leighton Herrman, and Mackinzie Zolck all had two hits to lead Rock Creek Mustangs JV.

morganpitchGame two had a similar outcome, the Mustang JV fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 14-0 loss to St. Marys. A double by Bre Cheever in the third inning was a positive for Rock Creek Mustangs JV. Again, defensive mishaps proved costly as the Mustangs had 13 errors, giving St. Marys more opportunities. Morgan Searle took the loss for Rock Creek Mustangs JV. She went five innings, surrendering 14 runs, behind nine hits, striking out five, and walking one.  Tatum Brunkow, Cheever, and Kayla Malbrough each managed one hit to lead Rock Creek Mustangs JV. Rock Creek JV will play at home Thursday vs. Council Grove and then host a JV tournament on Saturday with Royal Valley and St. Marys.

Rock Creek Softball drops games to MEL opponent St. Marys

Rock Creek couldn’t hold up against St. Marys dropping games 5-2 and 3-1 Monday. The mustangs took an early lead in the first inning via a Brynn Hammett triple who was driven home by Olivia Lee. In the bottom of the first inning, St. Marys tied things up at one. Rock Creek scattered hits around but couldn’t come up with innings that produced runs. Leading offensively was Brook Dillon who went 2-3 with a double. Jessica Kildow doubled while Joceline Eichem singled. Rock Creek had 5 hits and defensively committed 2 errors. Hammett took the loss for Mustangs. She went six innings, surrendering five runs, (4 earned), seven hits, striking out four, and walking zero. Credit St. Mary’s for having solid pitching and not committing a single error in the field.

Monday’s second game against St. Marys was a heartbreaker for Mustangs, as they lost the lead late in a 3-1 defeat. The game was tied at one with St. Marys batting in the bottom of the fifth when a St.Marys triple drove in the go ahead run. Again, in the game Rock Creek took an early lead in the first inning, with two outs, Olivia Lee drove in one run when she doubled. In the bottom of the second inning, St. Marys tied things up at one. Lee led Mustangs with two doubles in three at bats. Dillon, Maddi Figge, Eichem and Demi Kunkel each added a single. “I thought we played inconsistently and really let St. Marys set the tone each and every inning. We were on our heels and had no reason to be. Kudos to St. Marys on competing and earning the wins. ” Coach Brummett

Rock Creek will be off the rest of the week, with a busy varsity schedule next week; hosting Riley County Tuesday, and headed to Abilene Thursday and Clay Center Friday.

Rock Creek splits games with McLouth

Rock Creek softball fell to McLouth 6-5 on Thursday on the final play of the game. McLouth took an early lead in the first inning and led 4-1 heading into the top of the 6th. Rock Creek scored 2 runs in the 6th inning via a leadoff double by Brynn Hammett followed by an RBI single from Olivia Lee. Lee scored by a sacrifice fly from Haley Petty. Rock Creek was able to take the lead briefly in the top of the 7th inning whenbrookhit Joceline Eichem singled, pinch runner Mackinzie Zolck was moved to 2nd by Maddi Figge’s sac bunt. Zolck scored off of Brook Dillon’s hit and Dillon gave the Mustangs the lead off of a single from Hammett.
McLouth was down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was able to plate two runs in the bottom of the frame to finish/win the game. Rock Creek had eight hits in the game. Hammett and Olivia Lee each collected multiple hits. Hammett led all hitters with four hits in four at bats. Brynn Hammett took the loss for Mustangs while striking out seven.

In the nightcap, Rock Creek defeated McLouth 16-6 (in 5 innings) in part to Jayden Weers, who drove in six runs. Weers drove in runs on a single in the first, a home run in the second, and a double in the third.An early lead helped propel Rock Creek to victory. Rock Creek scored eight runs in the second inning. The big inning was ignited by a home run by Demi Kunkel and a home run by Weers. McLouth scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brynn Hammett earned the win. She tossed five innings, with seven hits, striking out five. Rock Creek had an impressive 19 hits in the outing – one from each Mustang that came to the plate in the game. Weers, Brook Dillon, Maddi Figge, Kunkel, Hammett, Olivia Lee, Eichem, and Jessica Kildow each collected multiple hits, while Haley Petty doubled and Laney Scott sinlged.

Rock Creek is 4-2 on the season and will continue play on Monday when they travel to St. Marys to begin MEL play.
